What is domain registration? Top
(A). Domain registration is the process of registering a unique name on the internet so that people can
find you based on that name. For example, google.com is a domain that GoogleTM
registered with the internet body through which they offer all their search services. Before you can
have your own web site you will probably need to register a domain name that has not been taken and
pay a small fee for this registration. It's possible that you may not need to register a domain name,
since a company may offer you a unique string after their domain name to place your site. For example,
MenuStation.com a leading restaurant menu site based in Santa Cruz, California, allows for the extension
of a name after their domain name (i.e., http://www.MenuStation.com/ChinaDynasty or
http://www.MenuStation.com/BoccisCellar). MenuStation creates its own subdomain for restaurants
(i.e., ChinaDynasty and BoccisCellar) and restaurants do not need to register this name with the
internet body since the site is served from the main web site MenuStation.com.
What is web hosting? Top
(A). Web hosting is a requirement if you wanted to create and manage your own web site.
The hosting company offers a server computer where you can place all your web pages for display
to the world. The cost of "renting" out space on the server is what the hosting company charges on
a monthly or yearly basis. For more information about Omotic web hosting packages please go to
the web hosting link to the left.
What is the process of acquiring a web site? Top
(A). There are a few steps involved in acquiring a web site
- Register a Domain Name
- If the company is a portal site, you might not have to register a domain name,
since they will append the name below their main domain name (check with the company
concerned). To register a domain name you will need to talk to the provider of your
web hosting or web design and ask them to register the domain name for you. Some
companies like Omotic offer all these services (i.e., domain registration, hosting,
design) in house, making it convenient for customers to deal with one company rather
than many. This can be convenient for you when you want to maintain and manage your
site that changes over time.
- Find a web hosting and design company
- After you have registered your domain name you will need to host your new site
with a web-hosting company who will charge you a monthly fee. You will also need to
have your site designed by a company. Companies can charge anywhere in upwards of $300 to a thousands of dollars for a complete design.
- Maintain and market your site
- This is often the most important and often overlooked part of any new web site.
You will need to carefully think about how you will advertise your site effectively.
This means that you will want to advertise your new web site everywhere possible including:
letterheads, business cards, and stationery. If you have registered a new site name,
make sure that you use an email that uses this new domain name. For example, if your
domain name is jumblejuice.com then you want the emails of you and other employees
to include name@jumblejuice.com.
You will also want to keep your site updated with fresh content which gives customers
a reason to return to your site. Search engine optimization of your site will help
you drive additional valuable traffic to your web site.
What is ecommerce? Top
(A). Ecommerce was originally a term coined for web sites with shopping capabilities,
where buyers could purchase goods online (i.e., amazon.com). Today, businesses typically conduct
some of their operations using the ubiquitous web interface. The broader term for this new growing
technology is ebusiness where a greater variety of tasks is done through the internet media and not just
limited to internet shopping.
More About Omotic services Top
(Q) How much do you charge for your web site design services?
(A). This depends on the type of site that you want and how much content will be on the site.
Typically, most of our customers don't have a web site and they ask us to design one that fits
well with the theme of their business. For more information on prices, please check our web
design section on prices for the type of sites that you desire. For more advanced sites
requiring ecommerce there are normally additional charges since the time and effort required to create these sites can be high.
(Q) Do I need to use a web site design company that is local to me?
(A) Most web design companies have clients all over the country and in some cases around
the world. The web sites range from a few pages to hundreds of thousands of pages.
Email is the best form of communication for both the web company and the client since the
program of web projects can be monitored simply by going to the developing site. Omotic
also does work for local businesses since some clients prefer to speak face to face
about their requirements.
(Q) Why should I use your web site design services over other companies?
(A) We have demonstrated over time a large base of clients who have all commended us on our
great service. Our services go beyond just web development. We build a lasting relationship
with our clients that allows us to deliver the exact type of services and products. We have
a suite of integrated products and services which is typically not offered by other
companies. Customers come to us because they prefer to deal with one company who can provide
most of their technology solutions.
(Q) Are there any hidden charges for your web site design or optimization services?
(A) There are no hidden charges, we will quote you exactly what is offered in any agreement
we draw up. Also our standard web packages do not include any hidden charges, please
enquire as to what type of services or products you are looking for and we can tell you
if there is additional work required.
(Q) Can I see the design while my web site is under development?
(A) We have worked with customers where the site is viewable as we are developing it.
We encourage our customers to see the web site to monitor its progress and provide feedback
so that we can complete the site to our customers utmost satisfaction.
(Q) Can I make changes to the web site design or text content once it has been started?
(A) You can make changes to the site as often as you like. There are two options for doing
this. Either you can access the web site pages and make the changes yourself or
alternatively ask us to carry out the changes. If you are thinking about updating
the site often we encourage you to take a few hours of hands-on training from us which
will allow you to make your own changes and save you significant amounts of time and effort.
(Q) How long will the design of my web site take?
(A) Normally if the site consists of a design and simple content (text and images)
the turnaround is about 3 weeks. For an ecommerce site this may take longer depending
on the size of the project in terms of inventory, administration, and shopping cart
complexity.
(Q) How much do you charge for updates?
(A) For updates of web site with no ecommerce the normal rate is $50/hr but
this is reduced if the updates you require takes longer than 4 hours.
(Q) What screen resolution will you design my web site for?
(A) Screen resolutions don't have an impact on the site if it is designed correctly.
The sites we create fit all types of screen resolutions.
(Q) I would like to use your web site design service, what do I do now?
Please contact us via our contacts page mentioning the services you are interested
in and we will reply via an email or telephone. List as much information as you can about
your requirements so that we can guide you about the time and cost it will take to complete
your site.
LAN: printer, file sharing, database and email servers. Top
A local company had a piecemeal network set-up over time which was growing and becoming
more and more difficult to maintain. They approached Omotic to redesign and reconfigure
their network. The following steps were taken to construct a network that took out
redundancies while meeting their present needs as well as allowing flexibility for growth.
- We examined the current network configuration and found where
all the shared resources were and how they were being utilized.
Our discoveries produced a list of enhancements to make to the
existing network, such as making printers shareable on the networks and
grouping shared file resources under one server. We also provided
them with a solution to do routine back-ups of important data and
checking backup restoration.
Internet/Intranets: Switches, Routers, Firewalls, Broadband Top
- A New York company approached Omotic to set up a fully
redundant and high availability system for their high-traffic site. We provided them with a complete redundant solution for high availability by adding hardware load balancing to the web servers and a fail over standby server for the database (non-clustered). In addition, we provided the firewall security to prevent hacking and denial of service attacks to the servers. Finally, a back-up solution was recommended to allow for the restoration of services in case of complete system failures.
Wireless Networks (No need for wiring!) Top
- An overseas company approached us to migrate their current network to
a wireless solution. We looked at the specifications of the most
cost-effective wireless hardware equipment in the market and recommended
several changes to the network where the wireless solution would have the
greatest benefit. These included configuring a broadband wireless router
with the firewall rules to prevent network hacking and setting up desktop
and notebooks with the wireless cards including PCMI cards. In addition we set up a local web-server through a dynamic IP address translation for employees to access and retrieve information.
